When Ingeborg Bachmann and Max Frisch meet for the first time in Paris in the summer of 1958 they are already international celebrities of the literary world. In the four years that follow, they dabble in great love and an open relationship between his hometown of Zurich and her adopted Rome. Frisch envies her fame; Bachmann finds his typewriter clatter and his jealousy annoying. She is emancipated, experiments with a liberated existence, is mobile and productive; in Berlin, she writes the famous speech: “The Truth is Bearable for Humankind”. In 2025, our "Beyond Boba" festival expanded to 1500+ attendees and showcased the high quality items and creations by Taiwanese and Taiwanese American companies. TAP-SD’s 3rd annual Taiwan Festival will be on August 22, 2026 from 1-5pm at NTC Park (Liberty Station)! Kumiko has been used in constructing shoji screens, latticework, and other decorative elements in traditional Japanese architecture. In this workshop, Instructor Michael Olin guides students as they learn the basics of kumiko, including the use of hand tools to cut the pieces and assemble the frame. Each student will work on a small project to finish and take home.

| 11:00 AM | Talk: The History of Manuscript Illumination The history of illuminated manuscripts is filled with beauty and intrigue. These hand-written books which were prized throughout Europe, had painted embellishments and often utilized precious metals such as gold and silver. The pages of these miniature works of art were made up of animal skins called vellum. Illuminated manuscripts were produced in Europe between 1100-1600, and often originated from monasteries or were commissioned by wealthy individuals who wanted them for their personal libraries. Between the 13th and 15th centuries, upper class patrons supported the creation of private workshops that flourished primarily in French and Italian cities and their surrounding courts such as Bruges. One has only to look at the masterpiece, "Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc De Berry" by the noted Limbourg Brothers, to understand how amazing and prized these handmade books became. By 1440 however, their popularity began to diminish with the ability to mass produce books with the advent of the printing press. In this docent-led virtual talk, important manuscripts will be discussed along with their influence on the art of the late Medieval and early Renaissance.

| Music: Sabrosas Latin Orchestra Sabrosas Latin Orchestra, San Diego’s first and only all-female salsa band and a 501(c)(3) organization, is celebrating five years of community, music, and fun in 2024. | Music: Around the World in Song Join us for an entertaining afternoon while supporting Osher's Theater World, a talented group of theater artists. Comprised of members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego, Theater World brings engaging performances to audiences throughout the year, and your attendance helps sustain future productions and creative opportunities for lifelong learners. This event, inspired by Fran Zimmerman and directed by Herb Hein, will feature 18 songs from around the world performed by an ensemble of singers with piano, drums, guitar, and accordion. Participants will explore dough development, gluten structure, and the rhythmic pulling technique that transforms a simple mixture of flour, water, and salt into long, elastic strands of noodles. The class culminates in assembling a complete dish, pairing freshly pulled noodles with a deeply flavored, adaptable sauce. Chinese pulled noodles trace their origins back over 4,000 years, with early evidence found during the Han Dynasty. Lā miàn, meaning “pulled noodles,” became especially prominent in Northern China, where wheat-based foods dominate. Over time, noodle-making evolved into both a culinary craft and a performance art, with skilled chefs stretching dough into hundreds of strands in a matter of seconds. The concept of a “mother sauce” reflects a broader Chinese cooking philosophy: mastering foundational sauces allows for endless variation across regional cuisines.

| Passport to Diplomacy Passport to Diplomacy is an exciting annual celebration of international engagement, cultural exchange, and citizen diplomacy that showcases San Diego's unique role as one of America's most globally connected regions. This collaborative event brings together the San Diego World Affairs Council (SDWAC), the San Diego Diplomacy Council (SDDC), and the House of Pacific Relations International Cottages to create an immersive afternoon of discovery, dialogue, and global connection in the heart of Balboa Park. A signature feature of the event is the Passport Program, a longtime San Diego World Affairs Council tradition that encourages attendees to experience the rich cultural diversity represented by the International Cottages. Upon checking in, all pre-registered participants receive an official event passport.
