Dor Hadash's unique play festival will present the third year of staged readings of fascinating not-yet-produced plays with Jewish themes and characters. Once again plays were submitted from around the world. The play selection committee, under the guidance of our new Literary Manager, Sarah Siegel, and with the assistance of professional actors reading selections for the committee and director J Marcus (Mark) Newman, chose two very different plays to do for you.
This year, the staged readings of two plays will occur over two weekends in our Ronson Court facility in Kearny Mesa. Rabbi Yael Ridberg, who will have just returned from vacationing in Israel, will lead a discussion following the performance of Martyrs Street.
August 4 and 5: Mark will direct a reading of Estelle Singerman by David Rush. In easily followed clever dialogue with a little magic realism thrown in quirky, funny and fascinating characters explore life, death, ritual and keeping the faith over french fries at McDonald's and with a giraffe at the zoo.
August 11 and 12: Mark will direct the much more challenging, and perhaps a bit controversial or confrontational, Martyrs Street by Misha Shulman. In parallel story lines extremists living on the same street in the West Bank confront pleas for reason among a group of young Israeli Jews and within a family of Palestinian Arabs.
