Between 1760 when Benjamin West embarked on the first artistic pilgrimage from America to Italy, and the 1880s when the practice began to wane, hundreds of American painters and sculptors made the trek to Italy. The earliest artistic travelers were mainly concerned with studying firsthand the art of antiquity and the Renaissance and were focused mainly on Florence and Rome, but later generations of Americans expanded their interests to include landscape and other genres and widened their horizons to include Campania, Sicly, and especially Venice.
Dr. James Grebl, Manager of Library and Archives at The San Diego Museum of Art, will trace the development of American fascination with Italy through the works of such artists as John Singleton Copley, Thomas Cole, George Inness, John Singer Sargent, and others.
